BPL Honoring Martin Luther King Jr.'s Civil Rights Legacy Throughout January

 

BPL is hosting several programs honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 

Birmingham, Alabama-The Birmingham Public Library is honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by hosting several programs in locations across the city throughout the month, including a civil rights discussion at the 20th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Lecture at the Five Points West Regional Library this at 3:00 p.m. this Saturday, January 14.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a national holiday celebrating the life and legacy of the famous civil rights leader, held annually on the third Monday of January (January 16 this year). His actual birthday is January 15. Click here for link to books at BPL about Dr. King. 

King won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for leading nonviolent protests to improve the lives of black Americans. His life and work continue to be celebrated long after his death in 1968. 

 MLK Day is also designated as a National Day of Service where people are encouraged to volunteer to improve their communities. The Birmingham Public Library’s MLK activities and programs kicked off last week with a MLK Scavenger Hunt for youth.

 Make it Monday: I Have a Dream! - Held Monday, January 9. 

 I have a dream! Join us for a special art experience filled with peace, love, and unity honoring the dream of Martin Luther King Jr. You may "take and make" or "stay and create". Dr. King Craft, recurring program that kicked off on Thursday, January 5 
This is a Grab & Go craft. Color the mosaic sheet and glue the Dr. King silhouette on top to create a work of art. 

Dr. King Word Search, that kicked off on Thursday, January 5 

Join us in the Children's Department to complete a fun word search puzzle!



Dreaming Aloud: MLK Paint Party Teen & Seniors Program Friday, January 13 | Starts at 1:00 p.m.

Participants from different generations will learn about the life of Dr. King while acquiring the skill of painting. This program is a collaboration between North Birmingham Library and Artist Willie Williams of Studio 2500. 


Giving March Youth Program Friday, January 13 | Starts at 4:00 p.m.

In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the youth department will "march" throughout the library and hand out bags of toiletries and snacks, thanking our patrons for being themselves and supporting our library.  

Human Bingo Youth Program Tuesday, January 17 | Starts at 4:00 p.m. 

In honor of It's Okay to Be Different month, children will appreciate and embrace differences in others by playing a people-centered version of bingo.
