With a final wrap-up of 2022, here are the top 10 most viewed Birmingham Public Library (BPL) blogs!
At a glance, 2022 was full of new programs that enriched the community and celebrations that honored the achievements of BPL staff and the legacies of iconic advocates. Keep reading to look back on the top 10 blogs of 2022.
1. 2021 Southern Exposure Films Donated To All 18 Birmingham Public Library Locations
The Alabama Rivers Alliance and the Black Warrior Riverkeeper partnered to donate to the BPL 18 copies of the latest editions of Southern Exposure, an award-winning film series dedicated to educating the public about Alabama's natural resources.
This series was created by independent filmmakers in six short weeks during the summer of 2021 and explores and celebrates environmental activism in Alabama.
2. Central Library To Host Book Release/Q&A With Singer-Author Omarion On September 16
The Central Library hosted the multi-talented R&B singer Omarion for his debut book release, Unbothered: The Power of Choosing Joy, in the fall of 2022.
His new memoir details his life under the spotlight and how he stays grounded through public setbacks. While the book release has passed, you can checkout a copy of Unbothered from the BPL today.
3. Help Put Together A MLK Mosaic Mural At Woodlawn Library
In honor of MLK Day 2022, the Woodlawn Branch Library hosted a group art program for students to work together to create a mural of Martin Luther King Jr.

4. Birmingham Zoo And Birmingham Public Library Team-Up To Make Learning A WILD Adventure
The Birmingham Zoo and the BPL launched the Birmingham Library Zoo Family Pass program, a program that builds reading skills and knowledge about animals. This program is open to children Pre-K through 8th grade, and students can check out these four zoo backpacks at the BPL to receive a single daytime admission to the Birmingham Zoo for up to four people.
The Birmingham Zoo Family Pass backpacks are still available for checkout at the Avondale Regional Branch Library, Central Library, Five Points West Regional Branch Library, and Springville Road Regional Branch Library.
Each February, the BPL releases all its Black History Month programs on the blog. You can find every Black History Month program happening across all BPL locations on the blog or our calendar. Expect to see the Black History Month 2023 blog soon.
The Titusville Branch Library expanded its monthly Community Resource Days to assist families over the holidays to provide toys and clothing for their children.
At the first Titusville Branch Christmas Resource Day, the Titusville Library also gave out 50 bikes and offered a cocoa bar, crafts, games, food, and music for patrons to enjoy.
Catherine Oseas Champion, the BPL's assistant archivist, was named the winner of the American Library Association (ALA) Rainbow Round Table's Newlen-Symons Award for Excellence.
This award honors a librarian, library staff member, library, library board, and/or library friends group who have designed programs and/or initiatives that respond to the needs of the LGBTQIA+ community.
The Central Library's Business, Science, and Technology department is hosting a series of workshops called 12 Months To Become Your Own CEO led by Neena Speer. In this blog, learn more about Neena Speer in a Q&A with the BPL.
This program is still ongoing, and the next workshop is on Monday, January 30, and will discuss accomplishing those rarely completed New Year's resolutions.
Thursday, August 25, 2022, marked one year since Birmingham lost Brian "Voice Porter" Hawkins, a poet and community activist who built a loyal following as the host and creative director of Bards & Brews, the BPL's popular spoken word poetry and craft spirits/beer event.
His death shocked fans across Alabama, and a year later, his legacy remains a vital part of Bards & Brews.
The BPL Board of Trustees appointed Ka'ryn Davis-West, a 30-year veteran employee of the Birmingham Public Library, as the BPL's new Deputy Director. She replaced Janine Langston, who was named the BPL Executive Director in December 2021.
Over a span of 22 years, she has worked as the head of several departments, including Circulation, Page Room, Interlibrary Loans, and Computer Services. Prior to being appointed as the BPL Deputy Director, Davis served as the BPL Central Public Service Manager/Coordinator from 2014–2017 and as a Regional Manager from 2017–2022.
