How Did Women's History Month Start?

Women's History Month started in 1978 as Women's History Week, a local celebration put on by the Education Task Force of the Sonoma County Commission on the State of Women in Santa Rosa, California. They chose the week of March 8 to incorporate International Women's Day into the celebration. Local Women's History Week observances spread across the country, and in 1980, a collection of women's groups and historians led by the National Women's History Project (now the National Women's History Alliance) successfully lobbied for the week to be recognized nationally.

President Jimmy Carter issued the first Presidential Proclamation in February 1980, declaring the week of March 8th as National Women's History Week. The National Women's History Alliance continued to lobby for it to be a monthlong observation instead of for a weeklong one and Congress finally passed Public Law 100-9 in 1987, which designated March as Women's History Month.

The National Women's History Alliance still chooses the annual theme for March. 2024's theme is "Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion" to recognize women who strive to "eliminate bias and discrimination entirely" so we can have a positive future.

Learn more about women's history on the National Women's History Museum website.

You can find more programs and opportunities for Women's History Month around Birmingham! The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute is hosting programs throughout the month; Sidewalk is running a Women in Film Week from Thursday, March 7, through Sunday, March 10; and the Women in Advanced Manufacturing is offering a free 6-month, part-time pre-apprenticeship training program for women of color that starts on Thursday, March 7. These classes will be taught at Lawson State Community College's Bessemer campus.
