Join Smithfield Branch Library for their 2024 Summer Reading Adventure programs! The Birmingham Public Library (BPL)  has  256 free Summer Reading programs  planned for this summer that all patrons to enjoy.  July is the last month for Summer Reading , but you can still stop in at any  BPL location  to register and win prizes for completing B-I-N-G-O cards and more.

2024 Summer Reading continues at the  Birmingham Public Library.   16 BPL locations across the city are hosting 256 combined Summer Reading programs  for kids, teens, adults and senior citizens during June and July. Today's spotlight is on Woodlawn Branch Library, 5709 First Avenue North. Woodlawn is hosting three youth programs. Participate in Drum Circles at Get Rhythm's Performances This Week at the Birmingham Public Library

  Birmingham, Ala. - Last week, the Birmingham Public Library's 2024 Summer Reading featured a special African drumming performance at the Central Library by Barry Johnson in celebration of Juneteenth.  This week, you can gain more knowledge about the art of drumming at five other BPL locations. Get Rhythm: Just Imagine A World Full of Music! features internationally known drumming facilitator John Scalici, founder of Get Rhythm .  Events kicked off with performances last week (June 18) at Avondale Regional Library , and continued yesterday, June 24, as Scalici led drumming circles at North Birmingham  Regional and East Ensley libraries. Exhibition of Artwork by New ASCA Fellow Will Jacks Extended through Friday, June 28

Will Jacks,  Joshua Tree - San Bernardino County, California  (detail)  Wheatpasted photo-collage on wood, 96'' by 96' Due to popular demand, artist Will Jacks’ striking exhibition of photo-collages has been prolonged for an additional week at the Birmingham Public Library . The exhibition opened on May 3 and will be on display in the Fourth Floor Gallery at downtown’s Central Library  through Friday, June 28.  Earlier this month, Jacks was honored with a fellowship from the Alabama State Council on the Arts , which it awards to outstanding individual artists and arts educators in Alabama to provide support for the creative growth of their careers.  Rabbit, rabbit is Jacks’ first solo show in Birmingham and represents the first time the 22 featured works have been exhibited.   The Birmingham Public Library & other libraries in Jefferson County have 198 books & DVDs about Willie Mays and the Negro League. BPL's digital collection includes a series of interviews with former Birmingham Black Baron players and BPL has YouTube interviews with Black Baron players as well. Juneteenth Q&A With David Reddick, Author of “Two Dogs and God”

  BPL PR Director Roy Williams with Author David Reddick,  a vendor at the 2024 Steel City Jazz Fest  Birmingham, Ala. - Over the weekend, while attending the  2024 Steel City Jazz Festival in Linn Park, I sought a vendor to buy some shirts for Father's Day and Juneteenth. I found the perfect one in David E. Reddick, buying both a Father's Day shirt and a Juneteenth T-shirt for me and my son, Royce.  As a published author myself, I was excited to learn that David is also an author. I got three of his books:  • "Two Dogs and God" • "The Good Little Leprechaun"  • "The Spiritual Side of Goal Setting - Why and How It Works" Reddick, 46, is from Anniston, close to my hometown of Jacksonville, Ala. That happens to be my mother Pearl Williams’ hometown. He is a graduate of Jacksonville State University, which is where I graduated and met my wife, Patrice.
