2024 Summer Reading: Southern History Programs Spotlight


Want to research your family tree? You can do that and more as the Birmingham Public Library's Southern History Department hosts genealogy workshops as part of BPL's "Adventure Begins at Your Library" Summer Reading programs during June and July. Southern History summer genealogy activities kick off at 11:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, June 5, with its popular Intro to Genealogy workshop.

Patrons can register for Summer Reading 2024 at any BPL location and be entered into a raffle for a grand prize. BPL will have 256 Summer Reading activities for patrons of all ages, such as adult activities featuring the Southern History Department's popular genealogy programs. 

Here is a sneak preview of our Southern History Department programs this summer including our popular Intro to Genealogy workshop.



Intro to Genealogy - Wednesday, June 5, 11:00 a.m., BPL Research Library Computer Lab, 4th Floor, 2100 Park Place and online via Zoom 

 Want to learn how to do genealogical research? Come to this introductory class that will help get you started on your genealogical journey. The staff in the Southern History Department covers such topics as vital records, courthouse and church records, and the Federal Census. 




Research Tips and Tricks – Wednesday, June 26, 11:00 a.m. BPL Research Library Computer Lab, 4th Floor, 2100 Park Place and online via Zoom 

 Learn more about how the library operates and how it can benefit your genealogy research. Get the most out of your library experience with tools like online databases, local indexes, the digital collections, inter-library loan, and more! 




Exploring the New Family Search – Wednesday, July 10, 11:00 a.m. BPL Research Library Computer Lab, 4th Floor, 2100 Park Place and online via Zoom 

This ever-evolving free genealogy website has changed dramatically over the past two years, presenting its users with fresh possibilities for research, significant changes in format, and new paths of navigation. Paul Boncella, map conservator for BPL's Southern History Department,  will provide an overview of its latest tools, as well as a guide to finding and using the newest features of its existing resources.

Patrons walk past this door all the time, but many never get to see what's behind it. We invite you to step into BPL's Rare Book Room and take a look at some of the library's great treasures. Registration required for Zoom workshop attendees only.
