Adventure Begins at Pratt City Branch Library: 2024 Summer Reading Spotlight

 


Looking for fun things to do this summer? The Birmingham Public Library is hosting 256 free programs, activities and events during June and July for patrons of all ages as part of BPL's 2024 Summer Reading: Adventure Begins at Your Library.

BPL is spotlighting each of our library's programs this summer. Today's spotlight is on Pratt City Branch Library.  Pratt City Branch is hosting  11 programs, five for youth and six for adults.

Wednesday, June 12, 1:30 p.m.   - Juneteenth Painting Celebration 

Jump into the festivities through the power of art and create an abstract painting to enjoy. Registration required.

Youth programs

Tuesday, June 25, 3:00 p.m. - Hoop for Fitness - Hoop There It Is!

Join the Hoop Lady (Robbie Lewis) for an afternoon of creative movement fun and adventure as she presents the history of that circle, we call the “hula hoop.” Hip, hip, hooray it’s a whirly twirly hula hoop kind of day. Registration required. 

Tuesday, July 9, 10:00 a.m. - My Library Scavenger Hunt 

Let’s go on an adventure and find things in the library. Complete your scavenger list and receive a prize. Enjoy the journey!

Adult programs

Thursday, July 11, 2:00 p.m. - Adult: Quilling for Beginners

 Join us to learn the art form of quilling. Enjoy this class by creating a decorative design using rolled paper, glue, and your imagination. Registration required. 

Tuesday, July 16, 1:00 p.m. - Documentary Now: Culinary Traditions 

Join us in watching a documentary series on the cuisine of African Americans throughout history and have a group discussion on what we learned and how it made us feel. Registration required.

Tuesday, June 11, 10:30 a.m. - Journey Into the Unknown (Youth)

Open a good book and open the door to a science adventure. With great stories of daring exploits as our guide, join the McWane Center to reveal the invisible, brave fiery dangers, uncover wonders below the surface of he earth, and soar through the skies at your library. 


Thursday, June 20, 10:00 a.m. - Dance Discovery: Alabama Ballet 

This up close and interactive demonstration by the Alabama Ballet provides a look inside the daily life of a professional ballet dancer from ballet technique to costumes and pointe shoes. Participate in fun exercises and enjoy a performance by Alabama Ballet Company dancers. 

Thursday, June 20, 2:00 p.m. - Paper Yarn Fun (adults)

Join us to learn the history and origins of paper yarn and make an original art bowl using this paper as a textile material that dates back centuries. Registration required.


Tuesday, June 25, 3:00 p.m. - Hoops For Fitness:

Join the Hoop Lady for creative movement fun and adventure as she presents the history of that circle we call the "hula hoop." Registration required

Friday, July 19, 2:00 p.m. - DIY Tote Bag (Youth and adults)

Join us to create your own book bag with the Summer Reading theme "Adventure Begins at Your Library."

Thursday, July 25, 1:00 p.m. - Game Table Adventures (Adults)

Whether you're a competitive player or just happy to play and enjoy a social chat, come play some of everyone's favorite games. Registration required.
