Celebrate National Poetry Month with the North Birmingham Library

Big lights and fancy nights are not a thing of the past—just on pause while the nation heals. To many it seems like life has come to a halt, but we are here to help you stay connected to online learning and keep busy with fun, safe activities.

April is National Poetry Month and the North Birmingham Regional Branch Library has created several online activities that center upon our “Be Inspired” theme. We want to encourage you to Read, Write & Share.

Follow the North Birmingham Library Facebook Page to read poems and get links to videos, book recommendations, and information about poetry and poets.

Always wanted to be a poet? Take the North Birmingham Library writing challenge. Write a short poem, verse, or lyric about how you feel or the things you see in nature. Need help to get your creative juices flowing? Check out our Facebook page. Each week in April poetry prompts will be posted. Whether you are an experienced poet or trying poetry for the first time, these prompts will give you ideas on what to write.

Finally, we want you to Share! Share! Share! You never know how your words affect others. Call or text a friend to let them hear what you have written. Or enter a poem into our "Be Inspired" poetry drawing:

  • Submit an original poem to https://forms.gle/VYG4ovpUg9jpBN4q9 by Friday, April 24, 2020. Themes and topics can range from nature to food. You can write narrative poetry, a haiku, or just let your creative juices flow and write about things that inspire you.
  • Adults and juveniles have a chance to win a gift card ($25 value). There will be two prizes given.
  • The winning poems will be featured on the North Birmingham Library Facebook page, so please make sure your poems are for a general audience and don't use profanity or include derogatory terms. Winners will be announced on Tuesday, April 28
