Did you know that the first superhero was created in 1936? The superhero was named Phantom and his origin story was featured in a comic strip in a U.S. newspaper.

In 1995, Marvel Comics employees created National Superhero Day. Each year on April 28th, National Superhero Day honors superheroes, both real and fictional that serve and protect while fighting evil.

For National Superhero Day, Smithfield Branch Library is Presenting “Get to Know Your Superheroes” this Tuesday, April 28, 1:00 p.m. via an online program on Zoom led by Erika White, a Library Assistant II  at Smithfield Library.

We celebrate the characters that have brought us joy over the years through comics and film. We honor our front line workers who are selflessly protecting us every day during this coronavirus pandemic. No matter who your superhero is, today is the day to celebrate them!

We will dive into the world of Heroes and Villains starting with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse. We go behind the scenes of the film to discuss the characters and storylines that inspired this Academy Award Winning film.

The National Superhero Day program is part of the BPL Photo Challenge taking place online throughout the month of April. It kicked off April 1 with the BPL National Walking Day Photo Challenge.
