Details: Since the Birmingham Public Library’s popular spoken word poetry-craft beer event is unable to be held on site due to the coronavirus pandemic, BPL is hosting an online version on its Bards & Brews Facebook page this Friday, April 3.  For details, see below.

If you want to enjoy some of metro Birmingham's best spoken word artists from the safety of your home, tune in this Friday, April 3, 2020, as the Birmingham Public Library hosts its first-ever shelter-in-place Bards and Brews.

BPL’s popular spoken word poetry/craft beer event, in its 10th year, is normally held at library locations, entertainment and craft beer venues across metro Birmingham, but is moving online due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"Bards & Brews is such an important platform for the sharing of personal, creative expression," said Lee Green, one of the participating poets and a member of the BPL Bards & Brews committee. "Today more than ever, we embrace ways we can stay connected without being physically connected. I applaud the Birmingham Public Library for taking this initiative and I appreciate the opportunity to participate."

The online Bards & Brews will be absent the free craft beer samples popular among attendees, but poet Green is hoping viewers will support local craft breweries by picking up their favorite beer from local brew pubs.

"Participating poets will be reciting their poems via the web conferencing site Zoom,"  said Candice Hardy, BPL Outreach Librarian and project manager over Bards & Brews. "Afterwards, a video of the performances will be posted virtually on BPL’s Bards & Brews Facebook page and the main BPL Facebook page."

Besides Green, several veterans of past Bards & Brews live events will share their poetry online. Tune in to see which poets will appear.
