Powderly Branch Library Now Offers Reading Tutoring on Mondays & Wednesdays

Tutoring programs at the BPL keep growing!

By Cheyenne Trujillo | Library Assistant Ⅲ, Public Relations

The Powderly Branch Library offers a new, FREE tutoring program on Mondays and Wednesdays, adding to the Birmingham Public Library's (BPL) growing list of tutoring services!

Now your children have even more opportunities to improve their grades (and parents have more time to themselves).

Between transitions from virtual classrooms to in-person classes, Alabama school systems are recognizing widening gaps in returning students' academic abilities.

The BPL provides free tutoring sessions and homework assistance to help students catch up in school and lessen the burden on parents and educators.

Tutoring programs, like this one and other BPL tutoring programs, provide an invaluable service to the City of Birmingham and its future by helping students thrive in academics.

Powderly Library's tutoring initiative is aimed at assisting rising second and third graders. Their tutoring program launches Monday, November 8.

Every Monday and Wednesday the Powderly Library will offer free tutoring sessions focused on reading only from 3:30 p.m.—5:30 p.m.

  • What: Free reading tutoring sessions for rising second and third graders
  • When: Every Monday and Wednesday from 3:30 p.m.—5:30 p.m. starting Monday, November 8.

The Powderly team is thrilled to engage students with free tutorial service.

Hardy, a trained educator turned librarian, is compassionate about the academic success of youth across the 99 neighborhoods of the magic city.

The benchmark of this initiative is to provide free services to students in hopes that he/she will become avid readers and are reading on his/her reading level by spring 2022.

The Powderly team partnered with the Rensselaerville Institute (TRI), a representative of the Alabama Department of Education, to provide a reading initiative in collaboration with the Powderly Page Turners called "Chap Tuesday."

This pilot initiative will be pre-recorded weekly and forwarded to classrooms statewide to reinforce reading. For more information, please contact the Powderly team at 205-925-6178.
