Parents and guardians, reclaim your afternoons and weekends because the Birmingham Public Library (BPL) is here to help your children with their homework!
Central Library’s Youth Department is launching a new, free tutoring service starting this Saturday, October 16.
This new program will be held every Saturday from 12:00 p.m.—4:00 p.m. on the second floor of the Central Library in the Youth Department.
First through third-grade students can get help in math and reading only.
Spots are limited, so please call 205-226-3655 or email cenyouth@cobpl.org to inquire about availability.
In the last few weeks, other BPL employees shared their resources, like Counting Stars Tutoring and HomeworkAlabama.org, on the BPL blog, too.
Counting Stars Tutoring is held every Wednesday at the West End Branch Library from 4:00 p.m.— 6:00 p.m.
Mary Harris Richardson has 30 years of experience teaching in the Bessemer City School System and is the star tutor of Counting Stars Tutoring.
She can help second through fifth-grade students and ninth through twelfth-grade students with subjects respective to their grade level, like reading, English, social studies, history, government, and ACT English preparation.

The BPL provides free online tutoring through HomeworkAlabama.org.
This program offers tutoring in most subjects, and tutors are available daily from 10:00 a.m.—11:00 p.m., allowing flexibility in your schedule.
You can even drop off essays for detailed reviews, review recordings and transcripts of your past sessions, and save your favorite tutors and set up future sessions.

The BPL is happy to provide the community with tutoring services like these for free.
Over this past summer, the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham awarded the BPL with a $16,000 grant to fund the Literacy Leaders Tutoring Services.
This program offered free math and reading assistance to all second and third-grade students at five BPL locations for four weeks, spanning from June to July 2021.
Central, Avondale, Five Points West, North Birmingham, and Springville Road libraries had assigned certified teachers to their respective library to oversee the program.
Literacy Leaders (high school junior or senior students, or a college student) assisted with tutoring while the teachers ensured the quality of each session and offered training to the program's staff.
The grant and tutoring program were created to address learning deficits furthered by the COVID-19 pandemic.
BPL's Interim Director Janine Langston also emphasized the connections that tutors could make with the young students and professionals in the program, creating opportunities for mentoring.
“Mentoring is an important component of this program as it sets up strong relationships between students and their tutors which is a factor for student’s success,” said Janine Langston.
