If you want to hear some of Alabama's most talented spoken word artists, join us at the Central Library on Friday, November 5, as the Birmingham Public Library hosts a Bards & Brews Poetry Slam.

10 poets will compete for a $300 grand prize in a highly competitive poetry slam event. A poetry slam is a competition using elimination rounds in which individuals perform their own original poetry before an audience of volunteer judges chosen from the audience.

"Join us Friday, November 5, at 6:00 p.m. to cheer on local poets as they compete for the grand prize of $300," said Candice Hardy, creative director of Bards & Brews and branch manager at Powderly Library. "This unique experience has a specific theme for each round of the competition: Joy, Pain, Music and Love. As creative director, I am thrilled to have so many poets engaged and willing to aid in the success of the First Friday event."

The slam will be limited to 10 participants - with a registration fee of $10. The poetry slam will be held in the Central Library Grand Reading Room. On-site registration begins promptly at 6:00 p.m. and poetry will begin 30 minutes later.

Bards & Brews is sponsored by a grant from the Alabama State Council on the Arts.

For more information, visit www.cobpl.org or call Bards & Brews Creative Director Candice Hardy at (205) 925-6178.

This will be BPL's second poetry slam of the year. On January 8, 2021, BPL hosted its first virtual poetry slam on the Bards & Brews Facebook page. The November 5 event will be the first in-person BPL Bards & Brews poetry slam since October 2019.
