In October 2021, Representative Terri Sewell announced $1,100,000 in TRIO Grant funding for the University of Alabama at Birmingham from the United States Department of Education. This funding is a part of the TRIO EOC program, whose mission is "to give all adults of all economic, social, and educational backgrounds the skills they need to continue their education."

Their programs provide counseling and college admissions information to adults interested in beginning or continuing their postsecondary education. TRIO EOC also provides services to improve financial and economic literacy. These programs are designed to counsel participants on financial aid options, like basic financial planning skills, and assist with the application process.

Other projects include career workshops, mentoring, and programs and activities specially designed for students underrepresented in postsecondary education, like students who are limited English proficiency, students with disabilities, students who are homeless children and youths, students who are in or aging out of the foster care system, and other disconnected students.

All of these services are provided free of charge to participants who meet the eligibility requirements:

  • Must live in the Jefferson County
  • Is a citizen of the United States
  • Is at least 19+ years of age or a high school senior
  • Wants to enroll in a GED or college program of their choice

If you have more questions or are interested, stop by their table at the BPL! You can find their table and a representative to talk to on these dates and at these locations:
