The Friends Foundation of BPL was nominated by Birmingham Public Library Executive Director Janine Langston. In her nomination letter, Langston said BPL is fortunate to have strong dedicated, support from the Friends Foundation after it faced severe budget cutbacks during 2020 and 2021 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Friends Foundation made a generous disbursement of $150,000 for the purpose of Collection Development, Langston said. These funds allowed BPL to continue fulfilling our mission "to provide the highest quality experience to our community for lifelong learning, cultural enrichment and enjoyment." In addition to these funds, the Friends Foundation financially supported BPL in Library Giving Day 2021, Summer Learning 2021, and Staff Day.
The Birmingham Public Library Friends Foundation is faithful to their mission to support the programs, services, and partnerships of the Birmingham Public Library, in service to the broader community, through fundraising, advocacy, and outreach.
The other recipient, Virginia Bugg, is a Homewood resident and loyal member of Friends of the Homewood Public Library for over a decade, including serving as Friends President from 2012 to 2016. She was nominated by Deborah Fout, director of the Homewood Library.
In 2017, Mrs. Bugg was appointed by the Homewood City Council to serve on the Homewood Library Board as Ward 2 Representative. She was reappointed to a second term in 2021.Mrs. Bugg has been a longtime faithful volunteer of the Homewood Library Bookstore for years, and was one of the first
volunteers to return when the book store re-
opened after it had been closed because of
the pandemic.
Historically, the Friends of the Homewood
Public Library have raised and donated
$35,0000 - $40,000 per year to the Homewood
Public Library. As a
Library Board Member, Mrs. Bugg has served as a council liaison for the Homewood Public
Library. She visits the Library
often and knows the staff.
In her nomination letter, Homewood Library Director Deborah Fouts said Mrs. Bugg is an asset to the Homewood Public Library.
"Mrs. Bugg is our Library Champion," Fouts said. "She works
with the Friends to raise funds for the
Library. She works with to Board to govern the
Library. Mrs. Bugg always has the best
interest of the Library at heart and is very
thoughtful, thorough, and fair in her
decisions."
