Free period products to end period poverty.

The City of Birmingham's Office of Peace and Policy's Women Initiative and the Birmingham Public Library are seeking to end period poverty by offering free period products.

People can pick up free period products from two BPL locations:

This program is a part of the City of Birmingham's Office of Peace and Policy's Women's Initiative established under the direction of Mayor Randall L. Woodfin. From their website, the Women's Initiative is "an international, intergenerational, and survivor-centered approach to addressing direct violence, structural violence, and cultural violence."

This initiative is seeking to end period poverty by supplying free menstrual products to anyone in need. The Journal of Global Health Report defines period poverty as a "lack of access to menstrual products, hygiene facilities, waste management, and education."

Lack of access to period products can cause isolation, mental and physical distress, and health complications for people who menstruate. Providing free products helps alleviate and remove these barriers, improving people's quality of life.

Menstrual products are provided by the Tri-County (AL) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, and the Birmingham Metropolitan Chapter of Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc. We are so grateful to be a part of this empowering opportunity.
