Join Southside Library for "Ask a Gardener" Community Seedling Exchange on April 1

  Want to take your gardening skills to the next level? Come to the    Southside Branch Public Library, 1814 11th Ave. South , this Saturday, April 1, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for a Community Seedling Exchange. This free event, which welcome Earth Month, is in partnership with the  Glen Iris Neighborhood Association,  along with supporters from the  Five Points South  Neighborhood Association, the  Birmingham Earth Coalition , the  Alabama Master Gardeners Association.  This will be a wonderful opportunity for persons who are new plant parents as well as seasoned plant parents to learn from Master Gardeners ways to prepare, plant, and maintain their gardens, inside and out.  Seedlings will be given away and seed packets will be available to “check out” from the Southside Branch ’s Seed Library. 2023 A Novel Tasting Silent Auction Spotlight: Murals Painting by Artist Amy R. Peterson

Artist Amy R. Peterson is donating this 16-by-20 inch painting, Under The Eyes of Ezra's Murals , valued $1,600, for the 2023 A Novel Tasting Silent Auction. The event is April 6 at the Central Library. Amy Peterson painted the Ezra Winter murals in BPL's Southern History Department on location. Birmingham, Ala. -  Attendees to  A Novel Tasting , the Birmingham Public Library fundraiser taking place Thursday, April 6, at the Central Library , will get a chance to bid on a special item: a painting of the historic Ezra Winter Murals in BPL's Southern History Department. Amy R. Peterson, an artist/art teacher who lives in Trussville, last month created a 16- by 20-inch painting of  BPL's Southern History Department and its famous Ezra Winter murals  that she is donating to A Novel Tasting 's silent auction. Book Review: "St. Lucy's Home For Girls Raised By Wolves" By Karen Russell

This collection of short stories was a lucky find for me, because I was looking on the shelves for books by Mary Doria Russell , came across this book by Karen Russell , and was instantly enchanted by the title St. Lucy's Home for Girls Raised by Wolves —how could I not pick it up with a title like that? It reminded me of all the childhood times when adults reproached us for bad manners or wild behavior and would ask, "Were you raised by wolves?!"

Tania De'Shawn Wins Magic City Poetry Festival Fellowship, Will Host Programs at BPL

The Magic City Poetry Festival  (MCPF) has awarded the 2023 Eco-Poetry Fellowship to Birmingham's Tania De'Shawn.   Through this fellowship, in partnership with the Birmingham Public Library, Tania will produce events and initiatives which uplift and enlighten our community. Her fellowship and funding to produce her events are made possible by Spiritual Direction for Writers and WVTM NBC-13 . Ashley M. Jones, Executive Director of the Magic City Poetry Festival and Alabama's first black Poet Laureate , said Tania is well deserving of the fellowship. "Since 2019, the Magic City Poetry Festival has selected a Birmingham-area poet for the Eco-Poetry Fellowship, an award which celebrates the ways in which poetry and the environment intersect," Jones said. Asphalt Art Initiative Phase 5 Completed Outside Smithfield Library

  The Asphalt Art Initiative is outside Smithfield Branch Library. Young people helped finish phase 5 of the Asphalt Art Initiative in January. Smithfield Branch Library  started the new year with a blast...of paint that is!  On January 5 and 6, a few of Smithfield Library's visitors dashed to see what all the "movement" was about outside the library, #1 8th Avenue West. Lydia Walker, the artist chosen to complete the work, welcomed helping hands to finish phase 5 of the Asphalt Art Initiative. The project began on August 23, 2022, as community leaders gathered to meet with Lydia as she unveiled her ideas for the grant funded project.  Lydia said of this phase of the art design, "I went with a book themed landscape that speaks to the idea that 'reading is dreaming with open eyes'. I wanted to create something that is still simple enough to be painted by all community members , and that would catch a young person's attention."  The first phase was c...
