Today, March 2, 2023, schools and libraries across the nation will celebrate National Read Across America Day in honor of the birthday of Dr. Seuss. The beloved children’s book author was born on March 2, 1904.
Read Across America was launched on March 2, 1998, and is the nation’s largest celebration of reading.
“Across the nation, teachers, teenagers, librarians, politicians, actors, athletes, parents, grandparents, and others develop Read Across America activities to bring reading excitement to children of all ages,” the NEA website says. “Governors, mayors, and other elected officials recognize the role reading plays in their communities with proclamations and floor statements. Athletes and actors issue reading challenges to young readers. And educators and principals seem to be more than happy to dye their hair green or be duct-taped to a wall to boost their students’ enthusiasm for reading.”
The Birmingham Public Library is joining libraries across the country in celebrating Dr. Seuss.
Avondale Regional Library, for instance, has three activities honoring Dr. Seuss.

About Dr. Seuss
Before becoming famous as children's book author Dr. Seuss, Theodor Seuss Geisel was born on March 2, 1904 in Springfield, Massachusetts. In 1921, he graduated from high school and enrolled at Dartmouth College. While there, he joined the humor magazine the Dartmouth Jack-O-Lantern and eventually became an editor-in-chief.
After he was caught drinking, which was illegal during Prohibition, he was forced to resign from the magazine. However, he decided to keep working for it and instead used the pen name “Seuss.”
Dr. Seuss wrote most of his most famous books - including Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham - between 1927 and 1990. He died at age 87 on September 24, 1991.
