Celebrating 2019 Thanksgiving Holiday @BPL


Happy Thanksgiving in advance from all of us at the Birmingham Public Library.

Several of our 19 library locations are hosting free events to help patrons give thanks to loved ones and have fun activities to get in the holiday mood. Programs include Family Fun Night at Avondale Regional Library paying tribute to the movie Frozen, Fall Bingo, and a Thanksgiving Scavenger Hunt taking place at Ensley Branch Library during operating hours from Monday, November 18 through Monday, November 25.

Here is a list of our upcoming Thanksgiving events, listed by day. Remember all 19 BPL locations will be closed for the Thanksgiving Holiday from Thursday, November 28 through Sunday, December 1.

Wednesday, November 13 

Active Living for Seniors: Tablescapes, 10:30 a.m., Five Points West Regional Library – Learn different ways to decorate your holiday table.

Thursday, November 14 

Fall Bingo, 3:30 p.m., Ensley Branch Library – Participants will play Bingo led by library staff.

Monday, November 18 

Thanksgiving Scavenger Hunt, all day during library hours, Ensley Branch Library, Monday, November 18 through Saturday, November 23  Patrons will search the library for clues needed to answer questions about the observance of Thanksgiving Day.

Tot Time with Mrs. Eve: Celebrating National Button Day!, 9:30 & 11:00 a.m., Avondale Regional Library – Buttons, buttons everywhere! Join us for this very silly morning of button fun! Storytime designed for 2 to 4 year olds, with a parent or caregiver; no groups, please. 24-hour advanced registration required. Call 205-226-4000 to register.

Tuesday, November 19 

Family Fun Night: Fabulously Frozen, 6:00-7:00 p.m., Avondale Regional Library – We're going to let it go and have some fun! Join us for a Frozen family night filled with stories, songs, games, and more. Free but 24-hour advance registration required. Call 205-226-4000.

Thursday, November 21

Fall Bingo, 3:30 p.m., Ensley Branch Library – Participants will play Bingo led by library staff.

Thanksgiving Scavenger Hunt, all day during library hours, Ensley Branch Library – Patrons will search the library for clues needed to answer questions about the observance of Thanksgiving Day.

Coffee, Conversation and Crafts Thanksgiving Potluck Meal, 11:00 a.m–1:00 p.m., Springville Road Regional Branch Library – The CCC group pitches in to offer a holiday meal for people who may not have any family with whom to share the Thanksgiving holiday. A true potluck, participants are encouraged to bring something to share with others. The group usually provides for about 40-50 servings. Paper products or bottled soft drinks may also be donated in lieu of food. Contact Kelley Laney at 205-226-4083 or kslaney@bham.lib.al.us to sign up.

Thanksgiving Basket Giveaway, 12:00 p.m., Smithfield Branch Library – The Smithfield Library will have a drawing for three Thanksgiving baskets which contain food to prepare a Thanksgiving feast. To enter the drawing patrons must check out five books and fill out a slip at the time of checkout; more than one slip can be filled out leading up to the drawing. Names will be drawn at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, November 25. 


Grilled Cheese Challenge, 2:00 p.m., Smithfield Branch Library. – Join us for our first Grilled Cheese Challenge! Learn how to craft an amazing grilled cheese and add what you like to your sandwich.

Wednesday, November 27

Action Moviethon, all day during library hours, Smithfield Branch Library (Note: the Smithfield Library closes for lunch from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m.) – Take a break from Thanksgiving plans and join us for an action moviethon! From superheroes to car chases to explosions, we will have it all. Bring a snack and choose from some of your favorites.
