Birmingham Public Library Hosts Bards & Brews' Biggest Slam Yet With Prizes Totaling $1,000

Bards & Brews Slam is back with its biggest slam yet! 10 poets will have the chance to win cash prizes totaling $1,000.00 and the crowd gets to decide who wins.

  • What: Bards & Brews Slam
  • When: Friday, September 2 | Registration begins at 6:00 p.m. | Bards & Brews Slam is from 6:30—8:30 p.m.
  • Details: 10 talented poets will compete with original poetry for the chance to win cash prizes totaling $1,000.00 ($500.00 1st place, $300.00 2nd place, $200.00 3rd place), and the crowd gets to be the judge. Registration starts at 6:00 p.m., and the slam starts at 6:30 p.m. Poets must register to compete and is available to the first 10 poets with their photo I.D. and a $5.00 registration fee. Admission to attend is free. Attendees must be 18 and up to attend and 21 and up with proof of I.D. to drink. Bards & Brews is sponsored by the Alabama State Council on the Arts.

Returning to the Central Library for Bards & Brews' last Slam of 2022, the September Slam will be a grand evening as poets go head to head each round to sway the audience in their favor to win a spot in the final three.

With prizes totaling $1,000.00, Bards & Brews is awarding its biggest cash prizes to date. Prize amounts are listed as follows:

  • 1st place: $500.00
  • 2nd place: $300.00

  • 3rd place: $200.00

In honor of Brian "Voice Porter" Hawkins, there will be a moment of silence for him at this Bards & Brews Slam before the Slam begins. Last September's Bards & Brews was a tribute to Voice Porter, Bards & Brews resident host who passed away a year ago on August 25.

Healthy Foodie Bakery is providing snacks and Avondale Brewing Company is providing beer for the evening. 

Barry Johnson is returning as our opening entertainment for the Slam. If you missed his performance at our last Open Mic, you won't want to miss his powerful drum solo as it reverberates across the crowd.

Johnson is a local drummer and leading member of Sahi On Ko Djony, a West African cultural enrichment program. Named after a Fulani term, Sahi On Ko Djony translates to "the time is now." Learn more about Johnson's passion and about Sahi On Ko Djony in this article from the Birmingham Times

Admission to attend is free. Patrons must be 18 and up to attend and 21 and up to drink with proof of I.D.

For competing poets, on-site registration begins promptly at 6:00 p.m. and is available to the first 10 poets with their photo I.D. and a registration fee of $5.00.
