Central Library on Wednesday to Host Community Connection Series III: Education Opportunities & Resources

The Birmingham Public Library (BPL) is excited to continue its Community Connection Series this Wednesday, August 17, at the Central Library downtown. The focus of this week’s event will be education opportunities and resources for children, teens, and adults.

Among the local organizations and universities scheduled to host tables are The Birmingham Promise, Community Care Development Network, Jefferson State University, Lawson State Community College, and UAB’s Educational Opportunity Center.

The Birmingham Promise allows Birmingham Public School students to gain real-world experience through internships as well as college scholarships.

The Community Care Development Network is a faith-based nonprofit that specializes in helping the whole family heal through programming such as education, mentoring, faith and life services, and community outreach.

UAB's TRIO Educational Opportunity Center has been offering resources on education counseling and college  admissions information  at Birmingham Public Library locations since this spring.

Each week, the Community Connection Series brings together a handful of organizations to share information about opportunities, resources, and services related to a specific topic. The series takes place every Wednesday at downtown’s Central Library from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.

Next week, housing assistance and housing programs will be the focus of the series. The environment, mental health, physical wellness, and volunteer opportunities are some of the subjects that will be addressed in future chapters of the Community Connection Series.

The idea for the Community Connection Series sprang out of BPL’s recent Citywide Resource Fair, which offered library patrons and the public a chance to gather information about resources available to them through community-based organizations. With over 400 guests in attendance and 70 organizations and businesses represented, the city’s need for this type of event was more than evident.

The Community Connection Series takes place every Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. on the first floor of the Central Library. It is free and open to the public. We hope to see you there!
