Councilor Crystal Smitherman Hosting Men's Health Forum at West End Library on Thursday, June 8

Birmingham City President Pro-Tem Crystal Smitherman is hosting a Men's Health Forum at West End Branch Library this Thursday, June 8.

This free forum will take place from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. at West End Library, 1348 Tuscaloosa Avenue SW. Featured speakers will be Sherwanna Wheeler of Oak Street Health and Dr. Dakota Price of Cahaba Medical Care.

"This topic is important because a lot of men are silent about their health and don’t go to doctor, feeling it will go away," said Smitherman, who represents District 6, which includes West End Library and Titusville Library.

Councilor Smitherman added there is a need for more forums focused on men.

"A lot of health forums help women, but don’t focus on men, especially men of color," she said. "I felt a need for this and am excited to bring it to District 6."

Councilor Smitherman said both facilities sharing the health information, Oak Street Health and Cahaba Medical Care, are located in the West End area. Oak Street Health has a primary care office at Rickwood Field, 633 Tuscaloosa Avenue SW. Cahaba Medical Care has a facility next to West End Library at 1308 Tuscaloosa Avenue SW.

This is the first of what will be monthly forums Councilor Smitherman is hosting at West End Library. Although this one is the second Thursday of June, she said the forums will normally take place from 5:00 to 6:00 on the first Thursday every month. The health forums are free and open to the public, with no advanced registration required.
