Details About the Citywide Resource & Career Fair This Saturday, June 3, at Central Library

The Birmingham Public Library (BPL) and the TRIO Educational Opportunity Center at UAB (TRIO EOC) are partnering to present the Citywide Resource & Career Fair this Saturday, June 3, 2023. This biannual event is scheduled to take place from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on the first floor of downtown's Central Library. It is free and open to the public!

Over 60 businesses and organizations will host tables at Saturday’s fair. A primary focus of the Citywide Resource & Career Fair will be on employment and career opportunities. Complimentary snacks, door prizes, and giveaways will be offered to guests, and arts and crafts tables will be open to both children and adults.

Here are some of the employers and staffing companies scheduled to host tables at tomorrow’s fair…

The Citywide Resource & Career Fair is an excellent chance to gather information about opportunities, resources, and services available through local nonprofit organizations. Representatives will be on hand to answer questions about education opportunities, environmental issues, financial literacy, food and housing assistance, health insurance, legal assistance, mental health, services for older adults, substance abuse, volunteer opportunities, and more.

Are you a parent or guardian in need of childcare services? Childcare Resources can help! Childcare Resources is Central Alabama’s only childcare resource and referral agency. Representatives from the organization will share information about its programs for both families and for providers, as well as about the Head Start program of Jefferson County.

Concerned about air pollution in your neighborhood? The Greater-Birmingham Alliance to Stop Pollution (GASP) will educate guests about its AirWatch program, which investigates complaints about air pollution, reviews records, and strives to ensure that the Clean Air Act is being fully enforced. GASP can deploy air monitors in particular neighborhoods and areas of concern.

Community Food Bank of Central Alabama will assist guests in applying for food stamps, now called the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Learn about Community Food Bank’s many other programs, some of which help eligible low-income adults, seniors, and individuals with necessities like prescriptions, insurance, and housing costs.

The Jefferson County Department of Health (JCDH) will provide information about testing, treatment, and symptoms of TB and STDs. BINX (at-home testing kit) cards with QR codes will be available to guests who wish to test for STDs at home. When the QR code is scanned, individuals will be directed to the ADPH website to order a free testing kit. Representatives from JCDH will also share information on PrEP and MPOX.

Birmingham DSA will education guests about its ongoing mutual aid opportunities (for both volunteers and for those in need), such as its Brake Light Clinics and period product distribution. Representatives will also talk about ways to organize workplace and tenant unions and associations when facing issues at work or in their housing situations.

Are you in need of a place to live to know someone who does? As the coordinating agency for the homeless Continuum of Care of Central Alabama, One Roof helps find housing for people who currently live on the street. The organization secures funding from Housing & Urban Development (HUD) for agencies that are a part of the continuum and that provide housing services needs.

If you or a loved one suffers from alcohol dependence or substance abuse, the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment Centers (ADATC) can help. ADATC operates three different facilities in Birmingham that allow people to get back and enjoy life again, including Pearson HallOlivia’s House, and the Zukoski Center. The priorities of admission are (1) Pregnant IV drug users, (2) Pregnant substance abuse users, and (3) IV users. ADATC is certified by the Alabama Department of Mental Health-Mental Retardation.

Positive Maturity is a local organization devoted to adults aged 50 years and up. Learn about the organization’s Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), the Foster Grandparent Program (FGP), and about geriatric social services (GSS).

Birmingham AIDS Outreach (BAO) will be at Saturday’s fair to promote its RISE-BHAM program, which provides HIV advocacy for the currently or recently incarcerated.

Finally, guests are encouraged to stop by the arts and crafts tables to create bookmarks, make jewelry, and engage in paper crafts such as origami. Featured crafts will include rainbow button bookmarks, miniature books, a collage project, a “mermaid bead” bracelet, and watercolor bookmarks. Take-home kits will be available as well.

We look forward to seeing you on Saturday, June 3, at the Central Library!
