Catherine Oseas, assistant archivist for the Birmingham Public Library, shared these details below about Historic Preservation Month.

May is dedicated to National Preservation Month. Also known as Historic Preservation Month, the month celebrates the nation's heritage through historic places. Preservation Month began as National Preservation Week in 1973. In 2005, the National Trust extended the celebration to the entire month of May and declared it Preservation Month to provide an even greater opportunity to celebrate the diverse and unique heritage of our country’s cities and states.

This year’s Preservation Month theme is “People Saving Places,” a national high-five to everyone doing the great work of saving places—in ways big and small—and inspiring others to do the same. The City of Birmingham has several days of programming for the citizens to learn and possibly participate in the future historic preservation of the city.

For the Library, we are in the business of Historic Preservation everyday – not just in May!

Activities that have already taken place include Historic Walking Tours of the Civil Rights District, including Kelly Ingram Park, and Government Square. A Salute to Birmingham’s Unsung Heroes of Historic Preservation was held on May 8 at Boutwell Auditorium.
