Spring Database Update 2023—Newspapers
You can search current and archived issues that are also available remotely 24/7 on any device. The user must be a Birmingham Public Library patron or be inside a BPL facility to access the database.
Alabama Newspapers and USA Today available via the BPL NewsBank database
Explore Birmingham, Alabama, and the United States through news, events, and people with The Birmingham News, The Birmingham Times*, other Alabama newspapers, and USA Today.
Below are the Alabama newspapers available online via the NewsBank database. In addition to these newspapers, patrons are also provided free access to the Alabama Media Group online-only subscription service, The Lede, which provides more detailed content from such renowned award-winning Birmingham writers as Joseph Goodman and Kevin Scarbinsky and Pulitzer Prize winners John Archibald and Kyle Whitmore.
Each newspaper can be viewed from the Birmingham Public Library databases page (http://www.cobpl.org/virtual/databases/) by going to the BPL website (www.cobpl.org) and selecting “Databases” from the black ribbon at the top of the page. From there, the user can use one of a variety of search options available. Alternatively, for the below-listed local newspapers, the user can search for “NewsBank” on the databases page, click and follow the desired link and, once inside the database, search specifically for the desired newspaper.

Alabama Newspapers available via BPL NewsBank database
Also, available via NewsBank is USA Today, which is accessible via direct link. It also provides image and/or full-text versions of current and past/back issues. It is now available via this link: USA Today, as well as via the Birmingham Public Library databases page, http://www.cobpl.org/virtual/databases/.
The BPL also offers a variety of databases for those interested in historical newspapers. These sources feature full-text digital images of the original print newspapers from Alabama, the Southeast, and many other parts of the United States, and the world.

- Access World News (NewsBank): Provides extensive coverage at every level—international, national, regional, state, and local. Search or browse more than 500 million current and archived articles from 139 countries and more than 5000 news sources. The unique interface helps users pinpoint useful information as well as navigate quickly and efficiently through millions of articles and video clips. Users can easily browse, print and email articles.
- America’s News (NewsBank): Search current and archived coverage of issues, events, people, government, sports, and more with the largest collection of full-text U.S. newspapers. Find titles from across the US and Alabama. Includes staff-written articles, obituaries, editorials, announcements, real estate, and other sections.
- Historic American Newspapers: Search America's historic newspapers pages from 1836 to 1922 or use the U.S. Newspaper Directory to find information about American newspapers published between 1690-present. There are currently 664 historical newspapers available to browse and view on this site and over 140,000 newspapers listed in the U.S. Newspaper Directory.
- Ethnic NewsWatch: This database contains full-text articles from newspapers, magazines, and journals of ethnic and minority press. The database consists of items from 280+ sources, including local and regional press like the following ones listed: Deep South Jewish Voice: Birmingham, AL; Speakin' Out the News: Huntsville, AL; Atlanta Inquirer: Atlanta, GA; The Atlanta Tribune: Roswell, GA; The Tennessee Tribune: Nashville, TN; and Contempora: Nashville, TN.
- Newspaper Source: The database provides full text to 35 national and international newspapers, including the Christian Science Monitor, USA Today, The Washington Post, and The (London) Times. As well, the database contains selected full text for more than 375 regional U.S. newspapers (including local press The Anniston Star, The Cullman Times, The Dothan Eagle, The Enterprise Ledger, and Montgomery Advertiser) and television & radio news transcripts from CBS, FOX, and NPR.
- Newspapers.com Library Edition-Southeast Collection: This resource contains full-text digital images from over 1000 historic and recent newspapers.
