The Flourish Alabama Announces Partnership with Birmingham Public Library for 4th Annual Word Up! Poetry Festival

About the event: Sponsored by The Flourish Alabama in collaboration with the Birmingham Public Library, Word Up! is a poetry festival featuring 12 school teams and 12 individuals who will compete for $5,000 in cash prizes by sharing original spoken word poetry. Preparation workshops are under way now and will culminate with the final poetry slam on December 8.  Birmingham, AL — The Flourish Alabama is thrilled to announce its continued collaboration with the Birmingham Public Library for the fourth consecutive year to present the highly anticipated Word Up! Poetry Festival. Scheduled for Friday, December 8, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Central Library downtown, 2100 Park Place, the 2023 festival promises to be an exhilarating showcase of young creativity and poetic talent. 

In its ongoing commitment to empower the youth of Birmingham, Word Up! will feature students competing for a chance to win over $5,000 in cash prizes by sharing their original spoken word creations. The event schedule includes semifinals at 5:00 p.m. and finals at 7:00 p.m., offering a captivating experience for attendees. 

Word Up! aims to provide a vital platform for the youth in the Birmingham area to amplify their voices and express themselves creatively. Recognizing the importance of fostering artistic expression, the festival serves as a much-needed outlet for participants to showcase their talents. With this in mind, The Flourish Alabama will be hosting writing and performance workshops for students throughout the weeks leading up to the event, creating opportunities for growth and development. 

These workshops began October 23rd and will take place virtually on Zoom every Monday and Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., and in person at the Central Library on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., and on Saturdays from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Central Library. The Flourish Alabama will also host youth open mics at the Central Library on Tuesday, November 14, and Tuesday, December 7 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. 

To participate in the poetry slam, interested students are invited to register at theflourishal.com/wordup, where they can find detailed rules and registration information. 

This year, The Flourish will be selecting up to 12 school teams and 12 individual participants to showcase their talents at the festival. The registration deadline is Friday, November 10.
