BPL's Monica K. Slater wins AALL Fellowship to Samford University Law Library
Birmingham, Ala. - Monica King Slater, a Library Assistant III in the Central Library’s Citizens Services Department, has won a fellowship from a prestigious national law library association.
The longtime Birmingham Public Library employee is now a George A. Strait Fellow at Samford University’s Lucille Stewart Beeson Law Library. The George A. Strait Fellowship, awarded by the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL), honors the memory of the distinguished law librarian and longtime AALL member.
As part of the fellowship, Ms. Slater is required to complete work hours at a host library. Ms. Slater, who has an interest in law library reference services and general law library operations, is a student in the Master of Library and Information Studies (MLIS) program at the University of Alabama. She holds a Juris Doctor (JD) from the Birmingham School of Law.
Samford University’s Lucille Stewart Beeson Law Library made the announcement last month.
"When I found out I was awarded the AALL's George A. Strait fellowship, I was beyond happy,” Ms. Slater said. “Shortly after being notified about the fellowship award, I was also awarded the AALL George A. Strait Scholarship. Being a scholar and fellow simultaneously was confirmation from God that I belonged in the Master of Library & Information Studies Program at University of Alabama, and that this is my time."
By day, Monica King Slater has been a library assistant of nearly 20 years at the Central Library downtown. Outside the library, she is an actress and a singer whose accolades gained her the moniker as BPL's songbird.
