On Monday, August 6, the first day of school in Birmingham, Selina Johnson and Connie Tolbert, both from the Wylam Branch Library, joined Autherine Bruister of the City of Birmingham Public Works Department as volunteers at a “Meet and Greet” held at Wylam Elementary School, greeting students as they came in.

Every day during the school year, many of BPL’s 19 locations across the city provide a safe refuge and friendly environment for students after school until their parents come pick them up. BPL has after-school activities to help educate students, computers for use to the public, and quiet places students can do their homework.
