2026 BPL Summer Reading Spotlight: Woodlawn Branch Library

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Every Birmingham Public Library branch offers its own special Summer Reading experience, but Woodlawn Branch Library stands out with a lineup you won't find just anywhere. Where else can families meet friendly therapy animals, hear an uplifting hip-hop program that celebrates learning, and sit down one-on-one with their Birmingham City Council Representative?

As part of Birmingham Public Library's 2026 Summer Reading Program, "Unearth a Story," Woodlawn Branch Library is offering a variety of free programs designed to educate, entertain and bring neighbors together. From hands-on dinosaur STEM adventures and line dancing to technology classes for seniors and opportunities to connect with community leaders, Woodlawn provides something for children, teens, adults and seniors alike.

Today's Summer Reading Spotlight highlights the unique programs that make Woodlawn Branch Library a destination for learning, creativity and community connection this summer.

Unearth a Story: KRU HipHop – Knowledge, Rhythm & Understanding

Wednesday, June 17 | 1:30–2:30 p.m.

Music meets learning when Birmingham performers KRU HipHop (Shaheem & DJ Supreme) visit Woodlawn Branch. Known for using positive hip-hop to educate and inspire young audiences, the duo will combine music, rhythm and movement while encouraging creativity, confidence and self-expression. The artists are also known for recording the library-themed song "Knowledge of Shelf," celebrating the importance of reading and libraries. Coffee and Conversation: Getting the Most Out of Your Cell Phone

Monday, June 22 | Noon–2 p.m.

Bring your iPhone or Android device and discover tips that make everyday technology easier. This relaxed, hands-on workshop helps adults and seniors learn practical smartphone skills—from texting and photos to useful apps that help people stay connected with family, friends and community resources.


Meet Your Councilor: District 4 Mobile Office

Tuesday, June 23 | 2–3 p.m.

Have a question about your neighborhood? An idea for improving your community? Stop by Woodlawn Branch Library to meet Brian Gunn during his District 4 Mobile Office Hours. Residents can speak with the councilor one-on-one, share concerns, ask questions and learn more about projects and issues affecting the district. It's a unique opportunity to connect directly with your elected representative in an informal setting.


Unearth a Story: Line Dancing with Tracy Williams

Wednesday, June 24 | 1–2 p.m.

Kick up your heels and join instructor Tracy Williams for an afternoon of fun, fitness and fellowship. Whether you're a beginner or experienced dancer, this lively class offers a great way to stay active while enjoying music with friends and neighbors.


Unearth a Story: Hand in Paw Animal-Assisted Therapy

Wednesday, July 8 | 10–11 a.m.

Animal lovers won't want to miss this special visit from Hand in Paw. Meet gentle, specially trained therapy animals and learn how they provide comfort, encouragement and emotional support to children, hospital patients, seniors and others throughout Alabama. Families will enjoy hearing heartwarming stories, interacting with the therapy animals and discovering the remarkable bond between people and pets.


Unearth a Story: Dinosaur STEM Adventure

Monday, July 13 | 2–3 p.m.

Young explorers can dig into the fascinating world of dinosaurs through hands-on STEM activities, fossils and scientific discovery. Children will investigate prehistoric life while developing problem-solving skills and curiosity through interactive learning.

Whether you're a pet lover eager to meet friendly therapy animals, a resident interested in talking with your city councilor, a parent looking for educational STEM activities, or someone who simply enjoys music, dancing and community events, Woodlawn Branch Library offers something for every age and interest this summer.
