From Line Dancing to Sewing, Summer Fun Awaits at East Ensley 

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — This summer, East Ensley Branch Library is inviting families, children, teens, adults and seniors to discover new interests, learn practical skills and connect with neighbors through an exciting lineup of free Summer Reading programs.

As part of Birmingham Public Library's 2026 Summer Reading Program, "Unearth a Story," East Ensley offers a diverse mix of activities that celebrate creativity, lifelong learning, local history, wellness and self-expression. Whether you're interested in sewing, genealogy, arts and crafts, science, exercise or community fellowship, there's something for everyone to enjoy.

Explore Science, Nature and Discovery


Chomp Chomp Oh My! Zoo to You

Tuesday, June 16 | 10–11 a.m.

Presented by the Birmingham Zoo, this interactive program invites young explorers to uncover clues about animals, habitats and Earth's changing environment while learning how scientists study the natural world.

Dynamic Education Adventures with The Science Lady

Wednesday, June 17 | 10–11 a.m.

Dinosaurs, fossils, explosions and exciting experiments come together in this high-energy STEM presentation that makes science both educational and entertaining.

Earth Layer by Layer

Wednesday, June 24 | 11 a.m.–Noon

Travel deep beneath the Earth's surface while exploring fossils, magma, magnets and geology through hands-on activities and demonstrations.

Michelle's Magical Poodles

Thursday, June 25 | 10–11 a.m.
Location: Ensley Recreation Center

Families will enjoy an entertaining performance featuring talented poodles, audience participation and plenty of laughs.

Learn New Creative Skills

Sew Right!

Every Tuesday This Summer
June 16–July 28 | 1:30–2:30 p.m.

Learn basic sewing, hemming and tailoring techniques from expert seamstress Martha Williams. Registration is required due to limited seating.

Yarn & Learn

Monday, June 15 and Monday, July 20 | 3–4 p.m.

Whether you're a beginner or experienced crafter, this crochet program offers a welcoming environment to learn new skills and create handmade projects.

Jewelry Making

Thursdays, June 18–July 30 | 1–2 p.m.

Design and create unique jewelry pieces while exploring your artistic side in this hands-on crafting series.

Stitch & Chat

Select Thursdays Throughout June and July | 1–2 p.m.

Bring your creativity and enjoy fellowship with fellow crafters while working on textile and needlework projects.

Unearthing a Story: Textile Narratives

Thursday, June 18 | 11 a.m.–1 p.m.

Participants will explore storytelling through fabric art, embroidery and symbolic design while creating meaningful textile works.

Celebrate History, Heritage and Community

Strokes of Freedom

Monday, June 15 | 11 a.m.–Noon

Celebrate Juneteenth through art, creativity and reflection while honoring the legacy of freedom and resilience.



Be Kind Birmingham: Free Pop-Up Shop

Wednesday, June 17, 11 a.m.

Stop by East Ensley Branch and take advantage of free clothing, toiletries and other items provided by Be Kind Birmingham. Arrive early as we expect a big crowd.  

Unearth a Story: Genealogy

Monday, June 22 | 11 a.m.–Noon

Discover tools and resources that can help uncover your family history with guidance from Birmingham Public Library's Southern History Department.

The Iron Ore Connection

Tuesday, July 7 | 11 a.m.–Noon

Learn about Birmingham's industrial roots and the mining history that helped build the Magic City.

Second and Fourth Fridays
June 12, June 26, July 10 and July 24 | 1–2 p.m.

Exercise, have fun and learn popular line dances in a welcoming and energetic environment.

Stories & Stretches (Yoga Storytime)

Monday, June 22 | 10–11 a.m.
Children and families can enjoy meaningful stories followed by an interactive yoga session that encourages movement, mindfulness and fun.

SALT: Senior Social Hour

Wednesday, July 8 | 10–11 a.m.

Seniors are invited to enjoy coffee, games, crafts and conversation during this relaxed social gathering designed to build community connections.

Movies and Summer Fun

Jurassic Movie-thon

Thursday, July 2 | 11 a.m.–1 p.m.

Travel back in time with a screening from the beloved Jurassic Park film series. Popcorn and refreshments will be served.
