Stay Active, Get Creative & Build New Skills at North Birmingham Regional Library This Summer

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Looking for a place where you can improve your health, learn new technology skills, enjoy weekly crafts, challenge your creativity and keep children engaged all summer long? North Birmingham Regional Branch Library offers all of that and more as part of the Birmingham Public Library's free 2026 Summer Reading Program, "Unearth a Story."

This summer, North Birmingham Regional combines fitness, lifelong learning, technology assistance, arts and crafts, children's activities and local history into a schedule designed to keep every generation active and engaged. Whether you're looking for a low-impact workout, one-on-one help with your smartphone, creative workshops or family-friendly adventures, there's something happening nearly every week.

Here's a look at some of the exciting Summer Reading programs happening this summer.

 Stay Active This Summer

Slide City Chair Aerobics

Wednesdays, Thursdays & Fridays  |  9:30–10 a.m.

Adults and seniors can stay active with this popular low-impact fitness class featuring warm-ups, cardio, strength training and cool-down exercises set to upbeat music. Healthy refreshments are served following each class.

The Morning Lineup: Line Dancing

Fridays  |  10–11 a.m.

Whether you're learning your first line dance or already know the latest steps, this energetic class welcomes beginners and experienced dancers alike for an hour of fun, fitness and fellowship.

Technology Help—One-on-One

One-on-One Tech Help

Monday–Thursday  |  10 a.m.–5 p.m.

Need help with your smartphone, tablet or laptop? Library staff provide individualized technology assistance to help patrons better understand their personal electronic devices. Whether you're learning the basics or troubleshooting a problem, this free service offers personalized support at your own pace.

 Weekly Arts & Crafts for Adults

North Birmingham offers several opportunities each week for adults to relax, socialize and express their creativity through art.

Craft Creations

Enjoy a different hands-on craft project each week while connecting with fellow community members.

Spend an afternoon creating fun seasonal crafts in a welcoming, relaxed environment.

The Fluttering Garden

Thursday, June 18  |  10 a.m.–Noon

Create a beautiful butterfly-themed canvas painting inspired by nature in this relaxing art workshop designed to reduce stress while encouraging creativity.

Art Attack

Wednesday, June 17  |  10–11 a.m. Registration required.

Explore your artistic side through fun, hands-on art activities designed for creative minds of all skill levels.

Scavenger Hunt: Unearth Your Story

Daily, June 12–22  |  9 a.m.–6 p.m.

Young explorers are invited to search the Youth Department for clues, hidden surprises and dinosaur-themed discoveries during this self-guided scavenger hunt that encourages curiosity and reading.

Once Upon a Thursday

Thursday, June 18 & Thursday, July 2  |  10–11 a.m. Registration required. 

Miss Pamela brings stories to life through storytelling, songs and themed crafts in this interactive program designed to spark children's imaginations and foster a love of reading.

Unearthing History: The Story of Birmingham Mining

Wednesday, June 17  |  10–11 a.m.

Dig into Birmingham's rich industrial heritage and discover how mining helped shape the city's growth and identity. 

  Featured Summer Reading Events

Breakfast Bingo

Monday, June 22  |  10–11 a.m.

Start the day with breakfast, fellowship and friendly competition during this popular community gathering. Guests can enjoy breakfast while playing three rounds of Bingo, with prizes awarded to every winner.

Unearth an Adventure with McWane Science Center

Tuesday, June 23  |  10–11 a.m.

Young explorers are invited to dig into the fascinating worlds of dinosaurs, archaeology and science through interactive demonstrations and hands-on activities presented by the McWane Science Center. This engaging program encourages curiosity while making STEM learning fun.

Adult Movie Night 

Tuesday, June 23  |  5:30–6:30 p.m.

Movie lovers can enjoy an evening at the library with a featured film, buttery popcorn and refreshments. This monthly program offers adults an opportunity to relax, socialize and enjoy a movie in a welcoming community setting.

Full S.T.R.E.A.M. Ahead

Wednesday, June 24  |  10–11 a.m. Registration required. 

Children will explore the exciting worlds of Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Art and Math (S.T.R.E.A.M.) through hands-on activities inspired by archaeology and dinosaurs. Budding young scientists will investigate, create and discover while building problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. 

African Fabric Home Décor Craft

Thursday, June 25  |  10 a.m.–Noon

Registration required. Space is limited. To register, call (205) 226-4025 or sign up in person at the Adult Department.

One of North Birmingham's most requested art programs returns by popular demand. Participants will create a vibrant piece of African-inspired fabric wall art while learning creative design techniques.

Eatable Creations

Wednesday, July 1  |  10–11 a.m. Registration required. 

Kids can mix creativity with delicious fun during this hands-on activity. Participants will build edible masterpieces inspired by the Summer Reading theme while discovering that storytelling and imagination can be as tasty as they are creative.
