find all of that—and more—this summer at Southside Branch Library.
As part of
Birmingham Public Library's 2026 Summer Reading Program, "Unearth a
Story," Southside Branch Library is offering a creative lineup of programs
that blend science, history, art and imagination. Whether you're fascinated by
prehistoric creatures, interested in Birmingham's industrial heritage, or
simply looking for a fun hands-on activity, Southside offers memorable
experiences for children, families and adults throughout June and July.

Branch Library.
🎩 Magic Meets Dinosaurs
Professor
Whizzpop's Monster Magic Show
Wednesday,
June 17 | 3:30–4:15 p.m.
Dinosaurs,
monsters and magic come together in one hilarious, high-energy performance.
Families will help assemble dinosaur fossils, hatch a baby dinosaur, dodge
prehistoric monsters and even watch a hungry T. rex enjoy a magical meal.
Packed with laughs, audience participation and amazing illusions, this
interactive show is sure to delight children of all ages.
🧶 Get Creative This Summer
Needle
Felting with Mollie McFarland
Thursday,
June 25 | 10–11 a.m.
Learn the
relaxing art of needle felting while creating your own handmade project.
Whether you're a beginner or an experienced crafter, this workshop offers a fun
introduction to a versatile craft that's perfect for seasonal decorations,
thoughtful gifts or simply enjoying a creative afternoon. All materials are
provided.
Create Your Own Geodes
Thursday,
July 9 | 10–11 a.m.
Discover
the fascinating science behind crystals while making your own colorful crystal
geode to take home. This easy, hands-on activity is fun for elementary-age
children through adults. Registration is encouraged.
Color
Your Own Dino
Thursday,
July 23 | 10–11 a.m.
Bring a
prehistoric creature to life by decorating your own foam dinosaur using
colorful markers and your imagination. Every dinosaur becomes a unique work of
art.
Bones
& Backdrops: A Dino Skeleton Craft
Tuesday,
July 28 | 10–11 a.m.
Young
paleontologists will build dinosaur skeletons using cotton swabs and glue
before painting a colorful prehistoric backdrop for their ancient masterpiece.
Recommended for ages 8 and older. Registration encouraged.
🦕 Dinosaur Fun Continues

Dinosaur Fossils
June
29–July 2 | During Library Hours
Pick up a
Grab-and-Go kit and create your own dinosaur fossil using simple materials to
take home and display. It's a fun activity that lets children continue the
"Unearth a Story" adventure beyond the library.
⛏️ Dig Into Birmingham's History
Sloss
Furnaces: The Mining History of Birmingham
Tuesday,
July 14 | 1–2 p.m.
Discover
how iron ore, coal and limestone helped build Birmingham into an industrial
powerhouse. This fascinating presentation explores the history of mining, the
role of Sloss Furnaces, company mining communities, and the difficult and
dangerous work performed by generations of Alabama miners. History enthusiasts
and lifelong learners won't want to miss this unique look at Birmingham's past.
