Anime, Candle Making, Japanese Culture & Creative Fun Fill Summer at Smithfield Library

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Whether you want to make your own scented candle, binge your favorite anime series, learn the basics of Japanese culture, crochet with friends, or watch dinosaurs come to life through exciting science experiments, Smithfield Branch Library has a summer full of fun waiting for you.

As part of Birmingham Public Library's 2026 Summer Reading Program, "Unearth a Story," Smithfield Branch offers a creative lineup of free programs for children, teens and adults. From hands-on crafts and gaming afternoons to book discussions, wellness services and colorful art projects, there's something happening nearly every week.

Science, Crafts & Special Programs

Dynamic Education Adventures with The Science Lady

Thursday, June 18 | 10–11 a.m.

Dinosaurs, fossils and exciting science experiments—including safe explosions—take center stage during this entertaining STEM program for youth.

Candle Making with T. Carter

Wednesday, June 17 | 11 a.m.–Noon

Learn the relaxing art of candle making while creating your own handcrafted candle and discovering fragrance blending techniques.

Hands-On Japanese Culture Experience with Eri T.

Tuesday, July 14 | 3:30–4:30 p.m.

Explore Japanese culture through crafts, language basics and interactive activities in this unique cultural experience.

Be Kind Bham Free-To-Shop Pop-Up Store

Wednesday, July 15 | 10–11 a.m.

Browse a free mobile pop-up shop operated by Be Kind Bham and take home useful items while supplies last.

A.R.M.S. Mobile Health Program

Monday, July 6 | 11 a.m.–3 p.m.

The Alabama Regional Medical Services mobile unit visits the library to provide community health resources.

Weekly Teen Favorites

Anime-nia

Thursdays — June 18 through July 30 | 3:30–4:30 p.m.

Anime fans are invited to gather each week for favorite series, fun conversation and a chance to connect with fellow fans.

Chill Mode

Fridays — June 26; July 10, 17, 24 & 31 | 3:30–5 p.m.

Relax after a busy week with video games, friendly competition and time with friends.

Weekly Creative Programs

Between the Lines

Mondays — June 22 & 29; July 6, 13, 20 & 27 | 2–5 p.m.

Spend the afternoon coloring, relaxing and expressing your creativity through fun art projects.

Off the Hook Crochet

Tuesdays — July 7 & 21 | 10–11 a.m.

Whether you're a beginner or experienced crocheter, join fellow fiber artists for creativity and conversation.

Adult Programs

Smithfield Book Club

Tuesday, July 14 | 1–2:30 p.m.
