Stitch, Step and Smile: East Ensley Library Builds Skills, Confidence and Community

At East Ensley Branch Library, Summer Reading is about much more than reading books. Branch Manager Kenyata Rodgers is introducing programs that help patrons discover new talents, stay active and build lasting friendships.

This July, the branch continues to offer two of its most popular recurring adult programs: Sew Right, where participants learn practical sewing skills they can use for a lifetime, and Line Dancing with Tracy Williams, a high-energy class that combines exercise, music and fellowship.

Whether patrons are threading a needle for the very first time or perfecting their favorite line dance steps, East Ensley is creating opportunities for lifelong learning while strengthening the sense of community that makes the library such a special gathering place.

Both programs have developed loyal followings, with participants returning week after week not only to learn new skills, but also to encourage one another, celebrate accomplishments and build lasting friendships.

Sew Right

Instructor: Martha Williams, We Sew Seams

When: Tuesdays (July 7, 14, 21 and 28) | 1:30-3:30 p.m.

Sew Right is a sewing program led by Martha Williams in which participants learn the art of garment construction. The class welcomes everyone, from people who have never touched a sewing machine to experienced seamstresses who are rediscovering a skill they learned years ago.

The program has become one of East Ensley's most popular offerings because participants are learning practical skills they can use throughout their lives. From creating their own clothing to repairing garments and making decorative items for their homes, members leave each class with new knowledge and growing confidence.

Participants also enjoy sharing their sewing accomplishments on the East Ensley Branch Library Facebook page while cheering on one another's progress.

"Another positive of this class is that the members bond and look forward to fellowshipping weekly," Rodgers said. "Participants have described the class as 'fun.'"

Line Dancing

Instructor: Tracy Williams, T-Will Productions

When: Second and Fourth Fridays (July 10, 24) | 1 p.m.
July Dates:
July 10 and July 24

Line dancing has become one of East Ensley's favorite ways to help seniors stay active. Beyond providing low-impact exercise, line dancing helps improve balance, coordination and memory. Rodgers says studies have also shown that dancing can enhance brain function while helping reduce the risk of dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

"One of the reasons line dancing classes are so popular is that they provide a supportive community," Rodgers said. "All are welcome to attend our classes and learn the easygoing teaching style of instructor Tracy Williams. These seniors take their footwork seriously and don't mind showing off."

Step out on the dance floor on the second and fourth Fridays each month at East Ensley Branch Library. No partner is required; just bring your enthusiasm and be ready to have fun.
