Meet Dr. Martin ahead of the expo in this short Q&A between her and the Birmingham Public Library.

BPL: Please introduce yourself and tell us about your book(s).

D.J.M.: My name is Dimple J. Martin, Ph.D. My three children's books, Charlie the Dancing ChickenA Tissue Box for All Seasons; and Coronavirus, Please Go Away! are beautifully illustrated and engaging. It is filled with rhymes and repetitions that instantly engages a young reader. The books are very relevant and relatable and children will want to read these books time and time again.

BPL: What inspired you to write your book?

D.J.M.: My Mom was my primary source of inspiration because she would give me books as gifts and they would always be beautifully wrapped. Also, I enjoy reading aloud to children. Children's Literature is the BEST!

BPL: Who is your favorite author and why?

D.J.M.: Definitely James Baldwin! Whenever I read a James Baldwin book or essay, I always trusted his voice. With every book, after the completion of the last chapter, his lived experiences would cause me to ask more questions. His books always kept me THINKING.

BPL: What do you hope readers get out of your book?

D.J.M.: While reading the books and looking at the colorful illustrations, I want children to become engaged with the sounds, words, and language.

BPL: Any advice you would give for new authors or those desiring to become an author?

D.J.M.: Set Writing Goals. Write about what makes YOU excited. Write about what YOU cannot stop thinking about. Be an Avid Reader.

You can purchase copies of her children's books at the Local Authors Expo on Saturday, November 4, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Central Library.
