BPL 2023 Local Author Spotlight: Sanchez Tanniehill

Sanchez Tanniehill

Gospel singer Sanchez Tanniehill of Alabaster has overcome a lot of obstacles in his life. Come learn his testimony of faith depicted in the memoir, "God Did It," as Tanniehill participates in the Birmingham Public Library 2023 Local Authors Expo at the Central Library downtown.

Tanniehill has an amazing testimony. At age 6, he suffered a stroke. Doctors told his parents their son would never learn to walk or talk. Tanniehill defied the odds and through his songs and new book is helping inspire others.

Tanniehill is the founder of God Did It Ministries, which aims to share compassion and love in the community by following Jesus example of love for others. In a Q&A with BPL, Tanniehill introduces himself to readers.

BPL: Tell me about your book.

Tanniehill: The book, "God Did It" (both the children's version and the adult version) are the inspirational story behind the success of Sanchez Tanniehill. I have overcome a lot of obstacles in my life, and I want to use my story to help others going through similar things. The book is meant to inspire, uplift and encourage people to pursue their dreams.

BPL: What inspired you to write your book?

Tanniehill: My mom, my ministry team, my family and friends really helped me to see that my story was bigger than just my music. The book is designed to reach a wider audience - beyond that of Gospel/Christian music - with the message that, with God, dreams are possible regardless of the obstacles you may face.

BPL: Who is your favorite author and why?

Tanniehill: Noah Galloway (Galloway is a former soldier from Birmingham who lost his left leg and left arm below the elbow during the Iraq War).  His story is very real, powerful and inspirational. And, much like mine, his story encourages others to reach for their goals no matter what other people perceive to be a "disability" or an "obstacle."

BPL: What do you hope readers get out of your books?

Tanniehill: I want people to know that no matter what others say, go for your dreams, and try to reach your goals. People are going to talk regardless of what you decide to do, so you might as well try to aim high and go for it. God can take the most painful, unreasonable and brutal of circumstances and bring redemption and purpose out of it......essentially to redeem your story for His glory. And, like me, the pain of your childhood can become the strength of your adulthood giving you a platform to share your story with the world.

BPL: Any advice you would give for new authors or those desiring to become an author?

Tanniehill: Yes. Do your research. Talk to other authors and find out who they recommend and, more importantly, who they do NOT recommend. Don't be afraid to ask the tough questions and do your due diligence. Books are low margin products, so you suffer financially going to events with very little traffic and/or high fees.
