2022 Local Authors Spotlight: Adrianna Dunnican

Adrianna Dunnican

This Saturday's 2022 Birmingham Public Library Local Authors Expo at the Central Library offers the chance for book lovers to meet authors with stories that inspire others.

One of the participants with a touching story will be Adrianna Dunnican, author of "Playtime With Nova." She is among nearly 30 authors who will have their books for sale and share their publishing journey at their booths. The BPL Local Authors Expo is from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and free for attendees.

In a Q&A with BPL, Dunnican talks of what inspired her book and shares words of encouragement for parents of special needs children.

BPL: Tell me about your book.

Dunnican: Playtime With Nova is about my nonverbal daughter, Nova. Nova’s friends decides to come over to have playtime despite Nova’s ability to communicate verbally. Playtime With Nova creates an inclusive and diverse environment that allow readers to see the commonalities between such different abilities.

BPL: What inspired you to write your book)?

Dunnican: My daughter’s way of life inspired me to write books. Most of her days consist of appointments and therapy due to a seizure disorder. I want to depict special needs kids having fun which is seen so very little.

BPL: Who is your favorite author and why?

Dunnican:

My favorite Author is Rick Warren because he takes us through a path of manifestation in life. Life is so precious despite the challenges we may face.

BPL: What do you hope readers get out of your books?

Dunnican: I hope readers get a different perspective when it comes to playtime with special needs kids. Don’t be afraid, but simply embrace the differences.

BPL: Any advice you would give for new authors or those desiring to become an author?

Dunnican: The number one advice that I would give to new authors is to write things down. It may be an incomplete sentence at the moment, but it can become a bestseller at any moment.
