2022 Local Authors Expo Spotlight: Kali Cox

Kali Cox is smiling at the camera. The wall is a bright blue background and there is a small tree in the background. She is wearing a light green, grey jacket and wearing a patterned scarf around her neck.

Kali Cox works as a professional counselor and wrote a children's book based on her experiences counseling young children and teens. However, even adults can relate to wanting to feel liked and how to handle that rejection.

Meet her at the 2022 Local Authors Expo this Saturday, November 5, 10:00 a.m.—2:00 p.m. and read this Q&A with the Birmingham Public Library to learn more about her.

BPL: Tell me about your book.

Cox: [Millicent Doesn't Like Me...And That's Okay is] a children's book about growing up, self-acceptance, and accepting others. The characters Kaysi and Millicent learn about respect while recognizing their own individuality in the face of peer pressure.

BPL: What inspired you to write your book(s)?

Cox: As a professional counselor, I have dealt with many children and teenagers' feeling as if they need to be friends with everyone to succeed or be happy.

BPL: Who is your favorite author and why?

Cox: Jodi Picoult—she's not afraid to tackle sensitive and controversial issues and somehow make them very personal.

BPL: What do you hope readers get out of your books?

Cox: I would love for my book to be used as a resource for teachers, counselors, parents, grandparents or anyone who works with children. Not to mention that it really is a good message for everyone!

BPL: Any advice you would give for new authors or those desiring to become an author?

Cox: Have patience—it's definitely a process. Be consistent and schedule time to brainstorm and network. Ideas are just ideas until you write them down and have a plan of action.
