2022 Local Authors Expo Spotlight: Vernet Clemons Nettles

Meet local author Vernet Clemons Nettles. She will be at the 2022 Local Authors Expo this Saturday, November 5, 10:00 a.m.—2:00 p.m. Nettles writes faith-based books and her most recent book is prayer journal. 

In a Q&A with the Birmingham Public Library, she shares what inspires her and how she hopes her books also inspires healing.

BPL: Tell me about your book.

Nettles: Primarily, my books are faith-based. I have written devotionals, annual planner/journals, a book of prayers, and a poetry collection. My most recent and seventh book is a prayer journal based on my first devotional. 

BPL: What inspired you to write your book(s)?

Nettles: My books are written to encourage us to continue and further our Christian walk. My inspiration comes from my life and the realization that I was harboring my past hurts and not releasing them to Christ. The devotionals and prayers remind us that God is always with us. The poetry is written from resilience as a woman poet and author. 

BPL: Who is your favorite author and why?

Nettles: Beth Moor is one of my favorite current devotionalist. I truly enjoy the comfort expressed in her devotions and bible studies. Emily Dickinson is one of my favorite historical authors because of her resilience as a woman poet and author. 

BPL: What do you hope readers get out of your books?

Nettles: I hope readers get a chance to relax, reflect, and pray. We spend a lot of time carrying our hurts instead of learning how they may move us closer to God's purpose for our lives. I am always hopeful that my poetry connects to the reader to support and validate their emotions and healing. 

BPL: Any advice you would give for new authors or those desiring to become an author?

Nettles: Don't stop writing. Explore your writing as not only your craft but also as your business. Remember your "Why."
