2022 Local Authors Spotlight: Phyllis Gentry
Inspired by true events, Phyllis Gentry wrote Happy the Helping Horse to help children feel comfortable with their disabilities. Phyllis Gentry will be at the 2022 Local Authors Expo this Saturday, November 5, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Central Library.
Find out how this charming story came to be in our Q&A with local author Gentry.
BPL: Tell me about your book.
Gentry: Happy the Helping Horse is a children's book. It is a true story about a horse named Happy, who developed equine alopecia and lost most of his hair. He looked different but did not let his disability keep him from helping children. Happy has a "Big Heart," and he teaches children that your looks do not define you. The rhyming story and watercolor illustrations make the book easy to read and understand. Children will learn that by helping others, they, will in turn, discover their own happiness.
BPL: What inspired you to write your book(s)?
Gentry: Happy is my horse, and he is very special. He has helped many children and adults as well. His "Big Heart" and ability to help people was an inspiration to me. I just had to share his story.
BPL: Who is your favorite author and why?
Gentry: James Patterson. The way he writes, I can visualize what is happening! It keeps me engaged.
BPL: What do you hope readers get out of your books?
Gentry: I hope readers learn that how you look is not what defines you. I hope they learn that by helping others you will find happiness for yourself. And also, that you don't discard an animal with a disability.
BPL: Any advice you would give for new authors or those desiring to become an author?
Gentry: Don't give up! Reach out to local authors for advice and inspiration. Find a professional "coach" to help you through the process and enjoy the journey!
